On October 19th, the KPF President discussed the past and future of international cities with the New York Landmarks Preservation Foundation.
The NYLPF’s annual forum invites industry experts to discuss the impact of the built environment cities. The 2021 forum “International Cities: Past/Future” explored how cities are evolving to adapt to factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change. von Klemperer focused on four traits at the forefront of building development: respect, reinterpret, remember, and rejuvenate. He utilized KPF’s global portfolio as examples of these descriptors before returning to the firm’s recent local work, One Vanderbilt.
Midtown’s tallest office tower, One Vanderbilt is mindful of and pays respect to the iconic works in the area, including the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building. The building’s design reinterprets the classic New York form through interlocking and tapering volumes and a modern material palette of glass and terra cotta. The tower also rejuvenates the area with the addition of a new, 14,000-square-foot pedestrian plaza and direct access to Grand Central Terminal.
von Klemperer was joined by Gregg Pasquarelli of SHoP architects, and Amale Andraos, Dean of the Columbia Graduate School of Architecture, moderated the panel. The NYLPF is a non-profit organization that supports the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission, established in 1980.
