KPF Principal Paul Simovic and Associate Principal Patrick Lam sat down with Technical Editor and Deputy Architecture Editor of the Architects Journal Fran Williams to discuss the repurposing and retention for its Portland stone with specialist stone subcontractor Grants of Shoreditch.
The article relays the history of Panorama St Paul’s, a 1980s office building most recently known as the BT Headquarters. Throughout, the article explains the ongoing success of the adaptive reuse strategy: “the project majorly improves upon the existing’s environmental performance and minimises future environmental impact by reusing all its Portland stone; the scheme employs modular construction methods, specifies low-carbon materials and adopts a zero-landfill policy.” Panorama St Pauls – set to become HSBC’s HQ – will provide a series of major architectural interventions to create workspaces with much larger floor plates and an abundance of outdoor space. At every level, office floors will have access to external terraces created by a composition of stepped bays.
