On April 10, the KPF Sustainable Design Director presented “The Sweet Spot,” a talk that showcased tradeoffs between embodied and operational carbon when designing sustainable buildings.
Alongside Teresa Moroseos, a Post-Doctoral Scholar at the Integrated Design Lab (IDL) in the University of Washington’s College of Built Environments, Carlos explored the importance of meeting net zero goals and the tradeoffs real estate professionals should know to achieve a low-carbon built environment from construction to end of life. Notably, to design buildings that operate on less energy and carbon, some of the choices, particularly regarding façades, require an increase in the building’s upfront embodied carbon. Carlos and Teresa’s presentation was based on research by KPF, the University of Washington’s Integrated Design Lab, and ULI Greenprint.
