The residential building in New York’s Greenwich Village is a finalist in the prestigious international BRICK AWARD 26.
At 64 University Place, the design intent was to respond to the materiality of the neighborhood and the local precedent of Revival-style architecture. The façade is composed of a grid of deeply recessed, stepped arches constructed of hand-set brick that provides great depth and texture without explicit ornament.
An expression of craft in construction, the delivery relied on the expertise and precision of the bricklayers as much as the thoughtful detailing and carefully selected materials. Flashed bricks were specified, for their subtle color variation. These were laid with an atypical 3/8″ raked mortar joint, with grout selected in a similar color—allowing the façade to read as a sculpturally continuous form. The resulting building connects the old and the new through a vigorous piece of contextual architecture.
Presented every two years the BRICK AWARD celebrates brick and ceramic building products as timeless materials for innovative and forward-looking architecture. Each of the shortlisted projects will be detailed in BRICK 26 Book. Category winners will be announced on June 11, 2026, in Vienna.
