Danube House

River City Prague

Danube House forms a gateway to the River City development from the heart of Prague, serving as an exemplar for the tide of commercial development changing the face of the Czech capital.

The first building to be completed in the KPF-designed River City Prague development, Danube House occupies a four-hectare, triangular parcel close to the River Vltava. The building responds to the architectural character of Prague, a city where the heaviness of the Medieval is balanced by the airy lightness of the Gothic. The dramatic prow of the form announces the redevelopment of a disused railway and light industrial zone, which stretches 60 hectares along the river and reconnects the waterfront to the Karlin district to the east of Prague’s historic centre. The “ordered chaos” of the split-faced red sandstone façades provides a lively rhythm within the structural grid.

Energy-efficient, stacked atria form the heart of the building. A glazed atrium faces the riverbank, visually activated by walkways, stairs and elevators. A second atrium along the roadside edge of the property provides a buffer for the 18-metre-wide office floors, minimizing the transfer of noise and pollution. A generous reception area and sky gardens provide breakout spaces for informal communication.
