Collegiate School

The Collegiate School’s modern, sustainable and flexible new home on the Upper West Side carries on nearly 400 years of academic tradition while preparing the school for centuries to come.

The architecture is based around the building block of the classroom, the current and future home for education. These building blocks are then used to encase a flexible “Nucleus”, an open and flexible central area that can be adapted spatially, technologically, and functionally as educational models shift. These malleable spaces, in addition to other traditional educational facilities such as a black-box theatre, an auditorium, a gymnasium, and practice facilities, which are all included in the building’s compact design, create a school that is comfortable and welcoming to the diverse student body. The resulting building is a place where interests and personalities are fostered and accepted, allowing each student to flourish.

From the high performance building envelope to the chilled beam cooling system, the Collegiate School meets and exceeds the contemporary standard for sustainable design while aesthetically suiting the traditions and values of the school it is home to. From the street, it is both distinct and respectful to its surrounding neighborhood, itself one of Manhattan’s most historic and beloved. With a combination of emphatic stone, and carefully detailed metal and glass, the building gestures to the past while guiding the Collegiate School and the Upper West Side into the future, supporting and inspiring generations to come.
