The design for Hang Lung’s new mixed-use development in Shenyang, Forum 66, creates a dynamic new icon for one of northeast China’s most vibrant and swiftly developing cities.

Situated at the south side of City Plaza with ample frontage on Qing Nian Da Jie, the area’s main thoroughfare, the Forum 66 site is undoubtedly one of the most desirable development sites in the city. KPF’s design features two dynamic office towers at the northern edge of the site, which act as a gateway from City Plaza to the new development and serve to reinforce the edge of the site. The main retail entrance at this northern edge is strengthened and defined by an elegant cantilevered box, extruded from the retail interior, which hovers over the north plaza. The central zone of the retail mall is situated further south, allowing easy access from the later phase office tower and the hotel tower.

The architectural language of the project is based on a geometry of gentle curves, which suggests the flow of the river from which the city of Shenyang takes its name. The office towers and hotel slab taper subtly in section to offer a sense of space in the middle of the complex. The office towers are conceived as a family of forms and are united through the use of a consistent curtain-wall design. These towers are capped by “floating”, glowing lanterns that sparkle during the daytime and function as beacons at night. While the office towers are gently curved in plan, they are very close to the optimal configuration of a rectangle. The proportion of the plan is broad enough to allow for a highly-efficient structural design and thus a minimized column area.

The curtain-wall of the hotel is in keeping with that of the office towers, but it stresses horizontality in order to contrast with the more vertical forms of the higher buildings. This effect is further heightened by the hotel bar’s considerable length in plan, its angled top recalling the tops of the office tower forms.

Finally, the southeastern portion of the site is reserved for two serviced apartment/office buildings and retail stores specially tailored for the needs of apartment residents. The retail mall is conceived as a glowing curved form that will help stimulate — through its use of a modular wall system that will help unite signage, graphics and architecture into a unique expression — an active urban life at street level. It is intended to encourage the public to participate in the life of this exciting development.
