CTF Guangzhou, a 530m tall mixed-use tower and podium, is located across from Guangzhou West Tower in that city’s burgeoning Tianhe District. The 390,000sm center is linked to public transportation through underground connections at the B1 and B2 levels, and to adjacent buildings via second level pedestrian bridges. Upon completion, CTF Guangzhou will be the tallest building in Guangzhou, and the tallest terracotta-clad tower in the world.
The tower houses 208,000sm of office, 75,000sm of residential, and 46,000sm of hotel program. A stepped podium with spiraling roof terraces houses hotel function as well as 47,000sm of retail, restaurant and cinema program.
The design of the CTF Guangzhou is derived from its multiple uses – the building steps to accommodate the changing floor plates of the various program types – but also from the form of the adjacent West Tower and TV Tower – the city’s other two landmark supertall structures. CTF’s chiseled setbacks are sculpted to acknowledge the various heights of the nearby towers, and to provide a crescendo on the city’s ever-expanding skyline. The overall effect of the tower is of a crystalline form ascending to the sky. This formal vocabulary extends to the podium, which extends upwards from the tower, with stepping terraces that frame a large atrium skylight.
The tower’s façade is designed to emphasize its gentle curved form and verticality. Long stripes of white terracotta extend from the tower’s base to its chiseled setbacks and top. By day, the tower’s terracotta and metal façade stands out amongst its all-glass neighbors. At night the glistening terracotta sparkles on the skyline. The building’s podium, sheathed in a metal screen of warm bronze, provides an active and vibrant presence along the large central green axis of the Tianhe District.
The building will employ a number of energy efficient tools in order to reduce its environmental footprint. In addition to its strong multi-level connections to public transportation, these include the use of high-efficiency chillers, façade materials with high thermal properties, solar panels on the podium roof, and heat recovery from the water-cooled chiller condensers. The building will stand not only as a symbol of Guangzhou’s ever-growing economic and social prosperity, but also of its ambitious green agenda.
