With
this building we attempted to intensify the dialogue between nature and
technology. The site was adjacent to a wooded rocky ravine of weighty
visual drama. The program, office space for one of the world’s leading
computer companies, encouraged us to express the cutting edge of
technology.
Our strategy was one of "woven juxtaposition", which countered
the natural landscape with the sharpness and lightness of stainless
steel. However, we also faceted and fractured the surfaces of the
structure to interweave with the facets and fractures of the natural
site. At one level we sought contast; on another level we attempted an
interlock.
The building is composed of stretched, tendon-like horizontal elements
which bind together key points of the site.
Anchored to the earth by a stone base, these tempered horizontals move
across the land with the intensity of a lightning strike. They culminate
in a prismatic roof surface which attempts to capture the spirit of the
changing sky.
The distinction between roof and wall is erased in an effort to achieve
a greater visual unity. The bond between architecture and nature is
further strengthened by landscape interventions.
